When a leader asks how the AI prospecting investment is performing, “we sent a lot of emails” is not an answer. Measuring return is not complicated, but it means choosing the right numbers on purpose.
Start with what you actually spend
Count the whole cost, not just the license: the platform, setup and training, the weekly time someone spends running it, and any separate data subscriptions.
The three numbers that matter
1. Pipeline per dollar. Qualified opportunities created from AI-sourced prospects, divided by total spend. Not meetings, not emails.
2. Cost per qualified meeting. What it costs to book a meeting with someone who actually fits your ideal client persona. Total meeting volume can hide a lot of poor fits.
3. Sales cycle impact. Compare how fast AI-sourced deals move, stage by stage, against inbound and manual outbound.
Leading indicators to watch first
- Fit rate: how many of the people surfaced truly fit your ideal client persona.
- Reply rate against your previous outbound baseline.
- Meeting show rate for AI-sourced meetings.
Pipeline is a lagging number and takes time to show up. These tell you earlier whether targeting and timing are right.
The CFO conversation
Lead with pipeline per dollar, then cost per qualified meeting, and show the trend month over month. Then answer the real question: what happens to pipeline if you double the investment? Teams that measure this way win budget. Teams that report activity lose it.
